Now you can carbonate sparkling water at home using climate positive CO₂ from AGA. We offset 110% of our emissions by planting trees. As trees grow they capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In this way, we contribute to a positive climate impact and the product becomes climate positive.
TOGETHER WE CAN BE CLIMATE POSITIVE - WATCH A VIDEO
Our trees are planted in Nicaragua through a Plan Vivo certified project called “CommuniTree”.
The project not only makes a climate positive impact but has many other benefits:
Our path to create climate positive CO₂ consists of three steps:
AGA’s climate positive CO₂ concept has three main components:
We have worked with both internal and external experts (U&We) to identify all the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our product’s life-cycle, based on the ISO-14067 standard. This includes emissions from raw materials, production, distribution and consumption as well as emissions linked to related activities such as business travel and packaging materials. This has enabled us to calculate the product’s total footprint in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). The data collection and calculations have been audited by an external, independent third party (KPMG).
Based on our analyses, we have identified a number of areas in which we can reduce our emissions. The process of identifying new, smarter solutions and measures in order to further reduce our environmental footprint has been prioritized and is continually in progress.
We offset our emissions by planting trees which sequester (capture and store) carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while they grow. We have chosen to compensate an additional 10% in order to draw more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than is emitted by the product. This means the product is climate positive.
Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide naturally through photosynthesis. Through the offsetting a volume of carbon dioxide equivalent to 110% of the emissions from our product is absorbed from the atmosphere and sequestered (captured and stored) by trees growing in the Nicaragua CommuniTree project.
Working with the consultancy ZeroMission, we identified sustainable certified projects for offsetting. It was important for us to identify a reliable and effective project that creates real value from our investment and we chose the CommuniTree project in Nicaragua, which is certified under the Plan Vivo Standard (www.planvivo.org).
The Nicaragua CommuniTree project guarantees that trees are planted in a sustainable way, in collaboration with smallholders who have secure rights to the land. As well as sequestering (capture and store) carbon the project contributes to biodiversity and more sustainable land use. The trees also bind water, which helps prevent landslides, and they provide shade for animals and vegetation.
The project also benefits the local community. Local farmers receive payments for taking care of the seedlings. Just over 700 small-scale farmers are currently involved in the project.
There are two main reasons why we chose this project:
In addition to the positive impact on the climate, we also saw an opportunity to benefit the local community.
More and more of us are aware of the problems associated with single use plastic, and how this is polluting the environment, with long-term consequences for animal and plant life. If we replace purchase of carbonated drinks in plastic bottles with carbonated water at home then fewer single use plastic bottles will be used, transport will be reduced, and households can save money.
We wanted to go one step further, then our closest competitors, by offering consumers climate positive carbon dioxide.
Through the CommuniTree project we offset more emissions than we emit. By offsetting 110% of our emissions by planting trees, which absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while they grow, we contribute to a positive climate impact. So, the product can be described as climate positive.
We can guarantee our carbon dioxide is climate positive through the following:
AGA’s history reaches a long way back, being founded over 100 years ago. To honor our history, we feel it’s best to look ahead and thus we want to do even more to draw the path for a sustainable future.
As a member of the world leading industrial gas company Linde, we are globally supporting our customers with high-quality solutions and technologies to help them to sustain and protect our planet. We work continuously to improve our own energy efficiency and use of natural resources.
